As we begin the 150th Anniversary of Civil War,we call to mind the many who have died protecting and preserving our freedoms. We are grateful to those who are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq and offer our prayers for those who lost loved ones in these wars. Modern management was about getting the most out of people to make a profit.Today the need is to develop the full potential of individuals. In the church do we use people to fill positions and do jobs or do we help them develop their God given gifts?

Hamel says the future belongs to companies and organizations that are adaptive, innovative, and inspiring. The challenge is to change as fast as change itself, to see that innovation is the work of everyone , and bring the gift of creativity and passion to everything we do! His book came from a comment on a note from a church member placed on a painting of Gandhi displayed during a church art event. The comment implied that Gandhi was in hell; to which Bell responded “who says so?” He has been criticized and even called heretic by some that he believes in universalism. For many of you this is not a controversy, but I raise it because many times in the church we have difficulty talking about difficult issues and allowing for differing viewpoints.

Recently Linnea Nilsen Capshaw led a PRC workshop on equipping church members for ministry in the church and in the world. She referenced the book The Critical Journey: Stages in the Life of Faith. The book suggests that in Christian faith formation between the journey inward (stage 4) and the journey outward (stage 5) there comes a “Wall”, a time when a person struggles with unanswered questions and doubts. She shared that in the journey of faith many persons hit a wall with the questions, doubts, and struggles, but often the church does not provide the space or opportunity for the persons to break through the wall.

Many churches are facing difficult decisions about church life and faith—from what kind of worship should we have, what stays in or out of budget—to issues of lifestyles and sexual orientation. We speak about safe sanctuary for children (and it is important) but do we also have safe places for persons to discuss difficult topics and issues without our faith or commitment being questioned?

Lent is to be a time of reflection—remembering 40 days when Jesus was challenged about his faith. Perhaps if we allow Lent to be a time for questions asked, doubts expressed, and differing opinions allowed and appreciated… at the end of Lent we will find ‘new life’ within ourselves and our churches.

Team Playing & Looking Good on Paper

Pat Guillick ,adviser to the Philadelphia Phillies, recently said that the 2011 Phillies are a better team ON PAPER than his 2001 Seattle Mariners that won 116 games. Plans can look good on paper, but they need to be executed well by the team to be effective and successful.

The recent Phillies teams have had success because they played well as a team; one person picking up when another player was struggling. They were a team that enjoyed being together, played hard, and had fun too. They also had a leader, manager, that they respected.

Your team in the church or at work can have ‘star’ players or persons with great ability, but if they do not work well together as team, the results can be less than effective and successful. Tom Rainer and Eric Geiger in their book “Simple Church” noted that large churches that had ‘star’ staff members , but who were not a unified team behind a clear purpose, ultimately did not do well in the long run.

An old saying goes, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. But you if your team is not united, does not work together toward a common purpose and execute the plan, then the plan only ‘looks good’ on paper.

Leadership in Time of Conflict and Change

Today we celebrate Presidents Day especially remembering George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both were great leaders at crucial times in our nation’s history. Washington led the nation in its infancy bringing together 13 colonies- new sovereign states- to form a union. Moving from monarchy to democracy – from separate colonies to a unified nation was no easy task. Lincoln had to lead a divided nation in the midst of a major conflict.

Leading in a time of change and conflict is difficult to say the least. John Kotter, former Harvard Business School Professor, writes there are key factors in leading in a time of crisis and change. In such times, a leader needs to remain focused on the goal. Both Washington and Lincoln were focused on the goal of ‘united states’ in America.

Both Washington and Lincoln knew there was as urgency about their task; waiting too long would result in failure to unite or reunite a nation. While both were strong individuals, they knew how to build a team around them. Lincoln did care for some of his generals personally, but he knew they were great military leaders and could win battles. Both men empowered their team to use their skills to mold a nation

Lincoln and Washington had a vision for a strong nation based on democratic principles and both would help to communicate that vision to the people as Lincoln did so masterfully in the Gettysburg Address. (I recently viewed a documentary on Lincoln that detailed how he used the technology of his day – the newspapers- to articulate his views as he ran for the Republican nomination. The press would print his speeches so that thousands read what only a few hundred would hear him say in person- his Tweet/Facebook.)

Generating short term wins helps people to believe in the direction you are leading. Washington had to confront the Whiskey Rebellion in order to establish the right of the federal government to tax.

Both leaders would not let up. They fought the temptation to give into the negative and remained focused on their mission. They worked to make the change stick. Before he was assassinated, Lincoln already was working on ways to bring the southern states back into the fold of the union—something that many resisted and almost caused the successful impeachment of Andrew Johnson.

The Up Rising

Like you, I have been watching the historic events in Egypt. The commitment, courage, and calm of the demonstrators has been inspiring. It got me to thinking. Would I be willing to take such a courageous stand? If so,what would be the cause? Yes, I have written to congress, signed petitions, but would I stand for a week in the city square for a cause unsure of safety and the outcome?

Mubarak 's desire to keep control and his unwillingness to deal with the demonstrations has weaken his ability to lead effective change in his country. When my position or views are challenged, how do I respond? Become defensive, ignore the opposition, fight?

While what we may face in opposition pales in comparison to what the Egyptians are facing, there are lessons to be learned. Several key values are important in challenging and chaotic situations/times. 1) Be clear about you purpose/mission. The demonstrators are clear about their purpose and mission. 2) Be willing to dialogue -speak, but also listen. (Something Mubarak was unable to do effectively.) Not every challenge that comes your way is valid, but that will only become clear if there is dialogue. 3) Patience and calm are strong virtues and give strength to resolve. 4) Have the courage to stand firm ,weather, and face the opposition for the long haul; too often it is easier to give in or give up.

What thoughts do you have ?

PS As I post this Mubarak has left the Capital and turned power over to the Army

When Snow Changes Our Plans!!

Snow, sleet , rain... oh the fun of living in Pennsylvania. But Dallas has snow too!! All that fine tuned, orchestrated, and billion dollar preparation for the big game may need some changes to the game plan. I do feel bad for Steeler and Packer fans who may not get to the game, but Jerry Jones' billion dollar stadium complex has to bow to mother nature. There is something ironic about $3500 tickets and $1000 parking spots at Walmart across the street and 4 inches of snow upsetting plans!

It is frustrating and disappointing when our all our planning for something has to adjust or change. That is why it is good to have a plan B.

We live a world in world of change and the unexpected...look at Egypt this week. Leaders need to be flexible and ready to adapt. We cannot always control everything! We need the best input, plans, and clarity about our purpose, but then we need to decide, trust, and move forward .And if it snows, sleets, or rains again, perhaps relax, take a pause, reflect, and then begin the process again.

PS Go Steelers!!

Church Meetings That Matter

Is this true for your church???

I recently led a workshop on " Church Meetings That Matter" at the PRC. Participants shared what they enjoyed about serving on a church board: know what is going on, sense of excitement as we move forward, sense of accomplishment, becoming better acquainted with the ministry and workings of the church. Frustrations were: lack of discipline on the part of some board members, long meetings, slow or lack of decision making, too much reporting, lack of enough prayer, being caught off guard or blind sided, lack of funds, and the disconnect of what the Board is doing and the congregation- communication.
While we did spend time on the nuts an bolts of an effective meeting
( agenda, reports sent out ahead of time) a major focus was on the importance of leadership development. Time needs to be spent on building relationships, learning, and the spiritual growth of leaders. Several recent studies on effective congregations point out that leaders who are growing spiritually and boards that are focused on prayer and discernment are keys to effective ministry.

Below is a summary check list for key items for effective boards and meetings: How would you rate your church?

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="MsoNormalTable" style="border-collapse: collapse; A new twist has been added this year- a symbolic gesture by Republicans and Democrats -members will not be seated by party. Early reports state the President will focus on the economy and jobs. Congress and the nation await to hear what plans he has to offer to meet these pressing issues .

What is the state of the union for your congregation? What would you highlight -or did you highlight in an annual church meeting? Every President while raising issues also reminds the nation about what is good in Amercia. What would you celebrate in your church? What ministry has especially changed lives this past year? What positive trends can you report?

What are the issues facing your church and community? Are financial and stewardship issues a major concern? What is being proposed to deal with this issue? Is your congregation aging? Are 20-30 year s olds missing from your church? How will your ministry need to change? Have you had to cut staff? How will these cuts effect your ministry? Are your adult members and leaders growing spiritually?

After the speech, comes the hard work. Will party lines be drawn again and bitter debate begin? It is easy to analyze problems , criticize others, and it is quite another thing to develop a plan and follow through and work for the common good. Is there division is your congregation? Is there common ground? Do you have a plan and commitment to follow through no matter the cost?

Recently most Presidents have ended their speech with the call - "May God bless America". God has already blessed the church with the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit; we need to be open to Spirit's leading and power.

ML King's Vision & Bedrock Beliefs

At the recent Martin Luther King Breakfast sponsored by Crispus Attucks in Lancaster, Joyce Davis, President of the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg and noted author, spoke about King’s vision for not only justice and peace at home but globally. It featured Ed Stetzer of Lifeway Research-- Note to self : always 'bookmark' !!)

A book review of "Hipster Christianity" by Brett McCracken quoted the author's criticism of churches trying to be ‘hip’ and not ‘real’. http://bit.ly/aHhscS

A CNN Belief blog quoted Michael Spencer of the Christian Science Monitor, ‘that one of the reasons that churches are on the decline is the church’s rabid pursuit of “relevance” and “pragmatism” that has produced in many churches a shallow vacuity.’ http://bit.ly/9gTVA1

How do we best communicate the message of faith in a changing culture and at times a world indifferent to the church? A message that is not relevant will have difficulty connecting with people. Paul knew his gospel had to be communicated in a relevant way with the Greek world of his day. But he also knew that what he preached would be foolishness to some. At the same time we need to be relevant, we need to be faithful to what is the core, DNA, of the kingdom message.

Is there anything that is keeping your church from being relevant and faithful?

Church Vitality

Just read the new Christian Century that arrived today. In it was a report on a study of United Methodist congregations on "key factors impacting vital congregations". The study's report identified four key areas that fuel vitality. 1- Small groups and programs, 2- Vital worship with mix of traditional and contemporary and relevant sermons, 3- mentoring by clergy ,4- Effective lay leadership.

I am also reading Ed Stetzer and Thom Rainer's book , "Transformational Church" where from their research of churches across the country they identify seven key elements for vitalization-transformation. 1- Missionary Mentality, 2- Vibrant leadership, 3- Intentional Relationships, 4- Prayerful Dependence, 5- Worship, 6- Community , 7- Mission

Both studies seem to compliment each other. Keys for transforming and vital congregations include: Worship that speaks to heart and mind, a Passion for Mission-especially in the local community, Lay leadership that is growing spiritually and is equipped to serve, a place of Connection and Community.

A key point in the Transformational Church" is that ultimately vitality is of God and under girded by prayer.

How does your congregation fair in these key areas??

At the PRC, we are offering workshop that focus on equipping the laity, vital worship, and meeting the needs of the community. Add to this that less than 2% of these churches are growing and Bill states it is a formula for a major disaster in the Christian church in America. Like the oil lurking beneath the surface that we cannot see and fully determine its impact, so the impact of this decline is hard to realize.

I do not want to play down the BP oil disaster ( it is huge) , but are churches, denominations, and church leaders any more prepared than BP was prepared to take action to prevent this disaster or limit the damage ? Many church members and pastors know their church is declining, but are they aware of the implications? Are they, are we, prepared to take the necessary steps to prevent this future impact on the religious life in America?

(Read Bills ideas http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/notes/21st-century-strategies-inc/no-title/434068502124

Facebook novice

I am a Facebook novice! I have had a Facebook page for about eight months and have about 100 friends and am a fan of several groups. I rarely put any personal comments on a page. One ‘friend’ told me, “You never post anything!” so then next day I did post something on her page! I do make some personal comments on my niece‘s and son Rick’s page.

I primarily use Facebook as a professional tool to network and learn what is going on in the larger church world. I do this by becoming a friend of such church leaders like Bill Easum, Adam Hamilton, and Len Sweet (Len posts, tweets, about everything!!) as well as other pastors and para-church workers such as Linda Stanly of Leadership Network.

I look at my Facebook page several times a day and almost every day I can find a new connection to a resource or idea for ministry that is on the web. The forms of social media will change, but it is here to stay.

I am a novice and we are learning at the PRC, but I believe it is something I must learn to use even better for myself and the PRC. It has been a good week here at the PRC, but I must admit to some weariness. It is challenging to lead a non-profit in these times of financial crisis along with times of great change. But like the Chinese character for crisis, there is also opportunity for new possibilities. It is a time when we are all called to re-think as well as think out of the box.

I was talking with a judicatory leader today. The PRC and denominations face similar issues. We could have simply lamented over our common concerns, but instead the conversation was exciting because we began to discuss ways that we might partner together to resource congregations which is the mission for both groups.

I am reminded of the sermon by Tony Campolo that he preached on a Good Friday. "It's Friday and Jesus is on the cross, the skies are dark, the world seems to be crumbling ....But Sunday is coming"

Yes, TGIF !! Because in the midst of discouraging or weary "Fridays" and challenging times, we need to remember that there can be a Sunday in the near future if we are willing to listen , see, and act .

Stand Off

President Obama and the Democratic congress are at an impasse with their Republican counterparts over health care. Like many Americans, I am frustrated and cynical and it seems that we still have the same old politics.

There are fundamental difference about the role of government in dealing with the issue of health care. However, both sides must admit that when they want a particular issue dealt with they are willing to have the federal government involved. The ideological differences and the need to defend their party and viewpoint have us at a stand still; little progress is being made.

Of course such stand offs exist within churches as well. Persons on opposing sides of issues such as abortion or gay rights often cause the church to be at stand still and unable to do the work of the kingdom. As I recently read, there are thousands of churches that are still having music wars and debates over screens in the sanctuary. Pastors and laity struggle to move the church forward and young adults are absent from our churches. God must be weeping and the devil laughing.

A key to resolving differences is the ability to find common ground and not simply want to defend or demand our own viewpoint. But our philosophical or religious views often blind us from seeing the common ground and the possibilities. Some times it requires a mediator, a counselor, or a consultant to break the impasse.

What is at at stand still in your life or your congregation? Can you let go defending your viewpoint and find the common ground?

SNOW !!!

Our area has been hit by two snow storms in four days with 3 feet of snow!!!! A Facebook friend reported that one church sign board read "Whoever has been praying for snow , please stop!"

It is amazing how nature can put a 'hold' on all the things we thought we just had to do and were important! Entitled "Lancaster Roots 300" the programs will not only celebrate the arrival of the early Mennonites to Lancaster County, but also the contributions of the Native Peoples who lived here before and after 1710 as well as the rich diversity that is Lancaster County today.

The worship service will share the music of several religious traditions as well as historical moments that recall the arrival of other faith traditions. The service is sponsored by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Hans Herr House, and co- sponsored by the Lancaster County Council of Churches and the Parish Resource Center.

The early Mennonites came to the New World to escape religious persecution. As they settled here they followed their peaceful ways and co -existed with the Native Peoples. They lived together with their diversity, religiously and culturally. Programs through out the year honor the Native Peoples . Land has been set aside at the Hans Herr House for the building of 'long house' and burial grounds for Native Peoples.

This early model of life in Lancaster could serve us well today as we live in very a diverse and sometimes divisive culture.

I commend the Mennonite Historical Society and Hans Herr House for sponsoring this year long celebration . Dr. King moved the church out of its pews into the streets. He took the teaches of Jesus and made them flesh in the cities and rural areas of America.

Dr. King sought to continue the good news that Luke recorded that Jesus came to proclaim: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ Luke 4:18-19

Dynamic churches today are taking seriously the message Jesus and the practice of Dr. King and seeking to minister to the needs of the community in which they reside as well as the global community. They are spending less time in the pews and more time on the pavements of cities and towns. Bringing good news to the poor and release to the captives. While we need to fold our hands in prayer, we also need to reach out our hands to heal and help.

Resisting Change

As I was preparing to write this Blog on resisting change , I checked my Facebook page and Len Sweet had one of his TD quotes "If you don't like change, you're going to like irrelevance even less." General Eric Shineski.

I was reminded on Epiphany how the establishment hates change. When the three wise men came to Jerusalem and inquired as to where the new born King of the Jews was, Matthew tells us that King Herod and all of his cronies were fearful. King Herod plotted to try to prevent the coming change of a 'new king' by seeking to have the wise men return and tell him where the new born king was (supposedly to worship him, but as we learn, he murdered innocent children in his search).

It is tragic, but often it is persons in positions of leadership ( but who do not really lead) who resist change the most. They are threatened and feel the need to protect the status quo. Herod had his leaders search the scriptures, but it was not for wanting to hear the truth , but to protect his power and position. Scripture is sometimes distorted and used in the church to protect the status quo. Some times persons act in 'un-Christ like' ways to prevent change.

I mentioned in my previous Blog an on- line devotional. This is the current 'benediction'

Look all around you and see what is real.
Hear what is true and be sure what you feel
Touch someone near you in love if you can
Give all you have and be part of God's plan.

Are you, (am I) , a part of God's plan or do we protect our own plans and positions? However I have been coming into the Center to use the 'quiet' space to catch up on some work, check the mail, but mostly to do some reading and planning for the coming year.

One of the things I did was to go over several legal size note pads on which I have been taking notes and doing work over the past few months. I tore off the pages no longer needed and made some new notes to follow up on things I said were good ideas to do. I also put on my calendar some of the ideas/items so I will do them and not just keep them as ideas on paper!!

I came across some notes from a video by Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg UMC that I watched on line last fall. Mike uses the acronym DRIVE as a plan for what he wants to do each day. It is easy to remember and yet provides for a holistic approach to daily living. It can serve as a plan for resolving to live better in the New Year.

D- Daily Devotions- Begin the day with God in prayer and scripture - or a devotional discipline you enjoy. Recently I have enjoyed using the Book of Common Prayer.

R -Read for Life Learning - In this ever changing world we need to keep up in our field as well as read some of the classics. A vision un-acted upon is only a dream or words in a strategic plan.

E-Eating and Exercising - Ouch!!! Once again I need to review what and how much I eat and to set aside time for exercising -other than pushing back my chair from the desk or exercising my hands on the keyboard or remote control.

D.R.I.V.E into the NEW YEAR and the road should be an enjoyable and effective one.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Following the Star

I have been using an online Advent meditation, "Following the Star" http://www.followingthestar.org/.
The meditation music along with the reminder to "Be Still"

in this busy season has been very helpful and inspiring.

When I was serving in the local church I usually read a story to the pre-schoolers about "Quintilius" the star. It is a cute story of small, insignificant star in the universe that is chosen to shine on that first Christmas night. Little Quintilius had to work extra hard to shine that night, so hard in fact that he burst into a million pieces. The story suggests that Quintilus still shines in each of us as we share the news of Jesus birth today. (It is one way to explain why Quintilius no longer shines. )

What was the Christmas star? Planets aligning? It is a matter of debate. Another Advent resource I have used is the Hubble Advent calendar and offers views into the mysteries of space. www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/12/hubble_space_telescope_advent_1.html
It provides spectacular pictures of our galaxy and galaxies beyond. It shows the beauty and vastness of space. The power and majesty in those pictures suggests the first Christmas Star could have been a unique galactic event. The pictures also serve as a reminder that planet earth is not even a pin head in the millions of galaxies. Yet God chose to come to earth and dwell among us in Jesus Christ -Emmanuel. Whether that first star was little "Quintilius" , planets aligning , or a unique cosmic event, it served as a sign that God was doing something special on planet earth.

Like many of you we have a star on our tree. As you look at the star on your tree( or perhaps an angel), let it serve as a reminder that God not only did something special that first Christmas night, but God can and wants to do something special in our lives even today. That God still desires 'peace on earth to all of good will' . That God can use the least of us as well as the vast universe to share good news to the poor and release to the captive. That the promise of "Emmanuel" is still ours today.

Have a Merry Christmas and Hope Filled New Year

Hubble Advent December 23

Professionals and Passion

Last evening our Parish Resource Center Board of Directors held its first meeting of the new fiscal year. We began with a dinner with the PRC staff. It was a great time for staff and board to get to know each other better. Boards and staff are all working for the same mission but they do not often meet together.

As Board members and staff introduced each other and shared a little about themselves it was very evident that they all held one thing in common. They are all passionate and believe in the mission of the PRC. You may say,"I would hope so", but this is not always the case in many non-profits. It is a 'job' or it a 'place to volunteer' because it is the thing to do.

Several years ago, I learned a basic principle about staff and board from Bill Easum. You can train people and teach them skills, but the passion for the work comes from within. He would suggest always hire someone who has a passion for your mission, you can often add the needed skills.

We have a professional staff at the PRC; educated and talented. But what makes the difference is their commitment and passion for the mission. We have a Board of excellent professional and business people who have much to offer, but it was a real joy to see their excitement and passion for the work of the Center.

Quality and professionalism are important, but they are worth little in the long run with out a passion for the mission.

Cash For Clunkers

The "Cash for Clunker" program seems to be a success. More than 600,000 older, fuel inefficient cars have been traded in for newer, more gas efficient cars. It seems to have been great for car dealer and the customer. However, I read about one person who was tempted to trade in for a new car , but did not do it ; she loved her old clunker and just could not get rid of it , even if it was a gas guzzler and inefficient.

I wonder if we need a 'Cash for Clunker" program for the local church. In my last post, I suggested that maybe a church should look at the programs it currently offers -What programs, people, or projects produce the most stress, pain, or financial pressures? What should a church stop doing because it is no longer effective? Are there any 'clunkers'???

The truth is most congregations have a hard time stopping or dropping a program or ministry. We just love it too much to let it go. May be a cash incentive would work? Now I doubt if there are any denominational funds for a cash for clunker program, so I am not sure from where the funds would come. But the truth is when we continue ineffective programs it is already costing a congregation valuable resources- time, talent, people, and money.

Any thoughts?

Health Care for Churches

Health Care reform is dominating the news. Whatever one's view on the various proposals, it is clear that there is need for reform of the health care system as well as the need for the average citizen to live a healthier lifestyle. This got me to thinking about health care for the church.

How is your own spiritual health? Do you have a balanced spiritual diet? Are you running on empty; are you growing weary in well doing? Are you exercising with the spiritual disciplines that can strengthen your well being? What brings you joy in life? What feeds your soul, your mind, your body? Is it time to take some spiritual inventory in your life?

What about your congregation? What programs, ministries, projects, people bring about the most joy; that add spark and life to you and your congregation? On the other hand, what programs, people, or projects produce the most stress, pain, or financial pressures?

What is the ratio between the amount of time your members spend sitting in meetings or groups as compared to being out in the community in mission and ministry? Is there a ministry or project that could 'stretch' your church and in turn strengthen it?

I would invite you to email or stop by the PRC for a 'check up' or a 'check in' with one of our consultants who could help you think through some of these questions. For susbcribers to the PRC 'health care system' , it will not cost you anything extra ; it is part of your susbcriber fee!

Let me know.

Looking at the evidence

I have been called (summoned actually) to serve on jury duty this week. Whether I am chosen or not remains to be determined. Being called to serve as a juror is an important part of our judicial system. It takes citizens from their normal routines , sets them apart in a small group, asks them to examine the evidence ( the facts) , come to some conclusions, and a decision. These decisions affect the lives and directions of the people in the litigation.

This process reminded me that it would good for church leaders to take time from the normal routine of church life, to ask a small group to look at the evidence, the facts, of church life, and come to some conclusions and decisions about the ministry and mission of the church. Jim Collins in his book "Good to Great" states that companies, organizations, that move from good to great are willing to take a realistic look at their situation, face the cold hard facts, (look at the evidence) in order to make decisions that will help the organization become great. The principle is called the Stockwell principle after the Vietnam POW James Stockwell who realistically looked at his difficult situation, but was also hopeful of being released. Other POWs who simply lived in the hope, or wishful thinking, that they would be released at any time often did not survive their imprisonment. The difference was looking honestly at the facts.

Has your church taken time out of its normal routine and looked at the evidence, the cold hard facts? It could make a big difference in the future direction of your church.

Len Sweet at the PRC

About 70 people had "Conversation and Coffee" with Len Sweet today at the Parish Resource Center in Lancaster, PA (http://www.parishresourcecenter.org/) .

It was great!!! Len challenged us immigrants living in the "Google World" to grasp the importance of image and experience as over print and reason. For most of us who were 'born' ( at first I typed 'book' -talk about Freudian typing) in the Gutenberg age, we need to learn to communicate the gospel in a image world. I would invite you to a conversation on some practical ways we can do this.

Len spoke about young adults 'twittering' during a speaking engagement he had and the tweets were posted on a screen. One said, "Len has lost me , are you following what he is saying?" Instead of blowing that statement off, he noticed it and responded to it. It allowed for further dialogue and connection with his audience. To many of us that is 'foreign'. But as I thought about it, in the black and pentecostal traditions, the 'amens' and 'shouts' and the 'talking back to the preacher' are the 'tweets' in those traditions. They help the preacher to know he/she is on target; it is their instant feedback.

Do you have ways you have made your worship/ministry more image enriched? How are you communicating in a "google' world. What are your questions/concerns. Let's chat.

Dave

davidloughery@parishresourcecenter.org
